Compare and contrast how Willa Cather in "Paul's Case" and Edgar Allan Poe in "The Cask of Amontillado" use setting and a central object or image to present similar themes. Discuss how the plots follow a similar progression.

These both show the viciousness of revenge through their use of imagery. "Paul's Case" shows the title character's vengeance from his teachers by his trip to Carnegie Hall and New York City. "The Cask of Amontillado" shows revenge in Montresor's vaults. Montresor took Fortunato there to make his death pay for his sins. Both were moved forward logically because they show the main character's mindset first before the main event of revenge.
