- it is grammatically consistent to keep sentences in parallel structure. for example, if you want to list activities you like, you have to keep them in the same form ("I like running, swimming, and golfing" uses parallel structure. "I like to run, swimming, and playing golf" is not parallel and doesn't flow as smoothly
