When I was learning (human) anatomy I used references (both artistic references and real life photographs) to learn proportions. Use a ruler to ensure that your proportions are accurate. After a lot of practice, The natural proportions of things should come naturally, although you shouldn’t hesitate to go back to references if you are uncertain about something or your drawing looks off
