1984 with connections In George Orwell's 1984, Orwell predicts a lot of things that are happening in our real world, maybe not in 1984 as he predicted but rather from around 2001 and one and further; still evolving and things he predicted nearly 70 years ago starting to happen, some things almost down to a T. As one good example will show, even on technically the first page he predicts something that is a major controversy in our world of today and the world of Winston Smith, “Big Brother Is Watching You” (Orwell 5). Quite literally talking about the government watching us, and as it is stated, “(the telescreen, it was called) could be dimmed, but there was no way of shutting it off completely. The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it; moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard.”(Orwell 6). This is quite literally happening to us on such a minutely basis and next to no one knows it. The government is so secretive about how they watch us that unlike Winston predicted, we don’t even need to be commanded to be under surveillance. “Senior politicians revealed that the US counter-terrorism effort had swept up swaths of personal data from the phone called of millions of citizens for years.” (Roberts and Ackerman). This article is literally talking about the government tracking our phone calls, our text messages, our emails, and any other form of communication we have that isn’t face to face. So much so that people have had government official such as the Secret Service visit them simply because of things they said that might have been treasonous, when they are alone, simply over a phone call, or maybe just thinking aloud. Not to mention the government has a agency known as the NSA (National Security Agency), whose motto is “Defending our nation, Securing our Future.”. It may sound like a good thing, but that literally says that at all times, at any point in the day, there could be someone staring directly at you, watching every move you make. Once again that may sound like a good thing, but when you break it down, it is not so different compared to Winston’s world and the government we all live under today. So what happens when the government is questioned about their invasion on our privacy, “People want the homeland kept safe, Feinstein said.” (Roberts and Ackerman). The government continues to claim over and over that it is all for our protection. Millions of phone calls and text, as well as all of your cameras being tapping into, constantly being recording to hear and see everything you say. The government claiming they are only using it to track criminals and terrorist. However, what happens when a specific person they are after come into contact with a civilian. At that moment, in the eyes of the government, the civilian is just as suspicious and guilty as the suspect. Which then somehow gives to government the right to read all your text and calls, saying that it is for the protection of the country, which some people could have settled with; but with what former VP Al Gore calls “the ‘secret blanket surveillance’ as ‘obscenely outrageous’”(Roberts and Ackerman), they took it one step further, beginning to track each and every call they can, just in case you are in contact with a criminal, they will find out, everyone becoming a suspect, everyone a criminal in the eyes of the government, slowly stripping everyone of their basic privacy rights that was guaranteed in The Constitution, the very document that makes us Americans, “Seizing phone records of millions of innocent people is excessive and un-American” says Jim Sensenbrenner, Republican congressman to Eric Holder, expressing his concerns over whether or not our US constitutions rights were still and place, worrying that soon our rights would no longer be our rights. A White House representative expressed his opinion and
