It shows that the explorers are so weak they can no longer perceive differences in temperature. It emphasizes that cold, like heat, can create a sharp, painful sensation that feels like a burn.

Not necessarily Oxymorons are used to make something more pronouncing "A little big" is contradicting in that big is.. big and little implies that it would be small But in reality its just saying thats its big
