Question 1. There are several, but in regards to psychology, here are the main ones: Cortisol - It is the 'happy' hormone that is released during periods of stress and anxiety. Adrenaline - It is a hormone released from the adrenal cortex that is present in Sympathetic ANS arousals. Epinephrine - The neurotransmitter form of Adrenaline, but it would affect the blood vessels. Norepinephrine - Almost the same thing as Epinephrine, but it affects heart instead. Leptin - Regulates satiety Ghrelin - Makes you hungry Prolactin - Milk production in women HGH - Stimulates growth and cell reproduction Acetylcholine - Used in muscular contractions, sarcolemma. It allows myosin to move over the actin. Dopamine - Reward pathway, arousal, learning Serotonin - Mood, the 'happy' chemical Melatonin - Used by pineal gland to regulate Circadian rhythms Substance P - Makes Pain Endorphins - Alleviates pain There are several more, these are the main ones. Question 2. It's a combination of both. There may be a genetic predisposition, but the abnormality gets room to develop under the correct circumstances. For instance, the diastress-model suggests that schizophrenia is 50% genetic and those that have a genetic predisposition may acquire it under the proper environmental and stressful conditions. This was discovered after a case-study with identical twins.
