When we convert a statement into an equation, here are some general rules that will help you each time
The word 'is' means equal =
more than, the sum means addition +
less than, the difference of means subtraction -
some # times, the product means multiplication *
quotient, dividing means division /

We also need to use variables, so you can use, a, b, x, y, any letter you want

I know what I said above will be somewhat confusing to understand right away, so here's an example:

The number of apples is 5 less than 5 times the number of bananas
Let's call the number of apples 'a' and the number of bananas 'b'

a is 5 less than 5 times b
Just used the variables for what they stand for. Imagine that 'a' as an apple and 'b' as the banana and we're trying to figure out their relationship.

is means =
a = 5 less than 5 times b

5 times b
times means multiplication so now we have

a = 5 less than 5b

less than means subtraction
5 less than 5b is 5b - 5
we're essentially subtracting 5 from 5b since we have 5 less than 5b

we finally get

a = 5b - 5
