zarkam21:

1. Briefly define ADHD, ADD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalcula. What is Central Auditory Processing Disorder and how do we treat these? 2. What is civil commitment and criminal commitment? What has deinstitutionalization done for the mentally ill? What moral issues need to be addressed when we consider deinstitutionalization?

@Ferredoxin4

xXMarcelieXx:

have you googled it?

Ferredoxin4:

Ok I'll do them when I get a chance

Ferredoxin4:

1. ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder - Hyperactive, impulsive, inattentive. ADD - Same as ADHD but no Hyperactivity Dyslexia - (Dys = unable to, lex = comprehend vocabulary/speech, Dys+lex-ia) - Unable to comprehend words of meaning or speech. Dysgraphia - (Dys= unable to, graph = write) - Unable to write Dyscalcula - (Dys = unable to, calcula = calculate) Unable to calculate or do simple math. I'll do CAPD and their treatments later on when I get a chance. I'll also do number 2 in a bit.

Ferredoxin4:

CAPD - also APD - inability of pitch location. They cannot determine where sounds are coming from, how to follow directions when told audibly, how to identify sounds in loud environments. People say they don't know the cause but imo its more of a complication in the brain rather than ears.

xXMarcelieXx:

what about number 2?

Ferredoxin4:

1. CONTD Treatments for ADHD/ADD -Stimulants like Ritalin -Antihypertension drugs -CBT and DBT Treatments for Reading and speech disabilities- (CAPD inclusive) -Occupational therapy -Better and more personalized support -Special education plans, known as IEP or 504 -others I'll do number 2 in a few

Ferredoxin4:

2. Criminal Commitment - Legally acknowledging someone as mentally ill because they committed a crime. ie The school shooter from MSDS was considered mentally ill and was put in a mental treatment AFTER committing the crime. Civil Commitment - Legally acknowledging someone as mentally ill not because they committed a crime, but because others believe he/she possesses the ability to cause a crime. This is usually done by relatives who are in a stable state of mind. These two are legal psychiatric paths to follow if someone is 'dangerous' to society. They are done to prevent the Post Hoc Effect, where a person is considered dangerous after he/she did something dangerous to society, and authorities were unable to prevent the incident. The best example is MSDS school shooter.

Ferredoxin4:

Starting in the mid 20th century, mental hospitals started overfilling. This was because mental institutes were just like other medical hospitals. There were psychiatric hospitals with several people and several beds but only localized to major urban areas. These mental hospitals started to overflow and psychologists and psychiatrists were pressured. As a result, deinstitutionalization occurred, which was the trend to remove patients from those large hospitals quickly and also start building smaller community mental centers. This might've seemed like a great idea, but it created more adverse effects that were unexpected. This meant that poorer people and patients received less psychiatric and psychological help. In fact, some statistics found that homelessness and poverty rates increased tremendously.

Ferredoxin4:

The moral issues that should be addressed with deinstitutionalization is that all patients should not be privileged at all, whether indigent or rich and that all mental patients must receive proper care at all mental hospitals.
