*please do not copy paste my response, this is just to give you some ideas of where to go with this* The sense of taste evolved as a mechanism for animals to detect what foods are good/safe to eat and which ones are not. For example, bitterness and sourness can indicate that a food is unsafe to eat, whereas sweetness or other pleasant tastes can indicate that a food is good to eat. That’s part of the reason sugary and starchy food tastes good, because these foods have a lot of energy that can be easily metabolized or stored. Now, we have food safety guidelines so we don’t necessarily have to just rely on what food tastes like to know if it’s safe or not. But can you think of any reasons, health related or otherwise, why we still need our taste buds?
