How can you find the central idea if the author does not state it directly? (other than it being in the beginning of the paragraph)

context clues. if they talk about a certain topic a lot, that's probably the main idea
cyborgmeat:
ask yourself "what is the author trying to tell me? what do they want me to know" and the answer will be your central - or main - idea
