Warriorz13:

With social media nowadays, we oftentimes construct and project to the world an image of ourselves that may or may not necessarily be true. On Facebook, for example, Student A may only post the most flattering pictures that showcase a round the clock, hard partying lifestyle so that others will see him as the “life of the party”. On Twitter, as another example, Student B might only retweet messages that reaffirm one’s political leanings so that others will see her as informed and actively involved in local politics. Student C’s Facebook pro-Chik-fil-a and anti-gun-control statuses portray her to be the conservative Southern belle her family raised her to be. Your first assignment is a rhetorical analysis of the identity you (intentionally or unintentionally) communicate to others. Select and analyze one of the following for your essay (and you must choose only the most recent of the following): your Facebook statuses, Facebook photo albums, Facebook profile information (interests, etc.), Instagram photos, Twitter posts, Twitter profile, blog. Or, if you don’t do social media, select and analyze pictures of your favorite place, personal pictures you have on display where you live, or a photo of the exact set of clothes you chose to wear to the first few days of work or class here at MTC this semester, etc. Imagine your intended audience for MWA1 is your ENG 101 classmates. Keep in mind that a rhetorical analysis assesses how a communicator argues rather than what an author argues. In other words, it focuses on the rhetoric employed in the argument (the intended audience, warrants, your purpose, pathos, ethos, logos, etc.), rather than simply summing up the argument. For this paper, you’ll need to do more than simply identify your likes and dislikes; instead, you should try to address not only why you like what you like, but also what your interests and choices might say about you to others, using the rhetorical terms we’ve discussed in this unit. Not only will you need to analyze the rhetorical situation in your social media or possessions, you also need to display an awareness of the rhetorical situation at play in this assignment.
