DDT was a highly effective insecticide developed in the 1940s. DDT was so good at killing mosquitoes and reducing malaria that its inventor, Paul Muller, won the Nobel Prize. But in the 1960's it was discovered that DDT is taken up by algae in the water, increasing in concentration at each step of the food chain. The insecticide was stored in the fat tissues of organisms. DDT is no longer used as a insecticide. Why is DDT no longer used? A) It is stored in algae. B) It harms animals high up in the food chain. C) It wasn’t useful in killing many types of insects. D) It was developed in 1940 and is no longer effective.
