some comma rules that will help narrow down to the right choices: - comma before a coordinating conjunction (connector of two independent clauses) - commas between items in a list of 3 or more* (this gets a bit tricky when you consider the Oxford comma) ex: item 1, item 2, and item 3 or item 1, item 2 and item 3 (both acceptable, just that one has Oxford comma and one does not). however, you do not need a comma between 2 items. - comma when you have a long introductory phrase (usu 4+ words but this is a loose guideilne rather than a strict rule) - commas around non-restrictive clauses/phrases (if the clause/phrase can be removed and still preserve the meaning of the sentence, you must put commas around it)
