So the Durand line forms a division between Afghanistan and Pakistan & parts of India. It was formed after the British invasion of India 'British Raj' and when the British sphere of influence attempted to enter the Kingdom of Afghanistan. After the first Anglo-Afghan war, Kabul Emirate was losing and the Emir and the British signed a treaty, allowing the demarcation of the Durand line and division of Afghanistan from Pakistan.

This made Afghanistan a part of the "protectorates" of the British. This created ethnic strife because there were Pashtuns leaving in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Eventually this lead to the second Anglo Afghan war, where the British lost control of Afghanistan in 1919.
