Depends on the project in context and the audience. Let's say you are promoting an item that leads to cultural controversy, ie a cultural appropriation. Once it reaches the mass, your product is done for.

Now your project must also make it to the mass, in terms of attractiveness. Aside from antiques if you are presenting an idea that is about, gene therapy over clothing of the 1960's, genome therapy will hit immediately

Which is why I suggested Kickstarter. You could have went there and did your own research concerning what is attractive, what audience would be most receptive to which projects etc.
