He felt terrible because of the tragic things that happened with his family involving with alcohol. Also, it was stressful for him to work in an industry and had to work long hours of labor to keep his family alive. Finally, throughout the story that a man was struggling with his family trying to find employment and be able to provide for his family but he wasn't successful to achieve his "American Dream" by the unhealthy long hours of labor working conditions that he worked under then affected his family.
