While closely related to ants and wasps, bees are the insects that produce delicious honey. 1They have an important function in pollinating flowering plants. For many people, knowledge of bees is limited to a painful familiarity with the sting of a honey bee. 2But these winged, flower-feeding insects have a fascinating story.

Approximately 320,000 bee species exists worldwide. Scientists can determine delicate differences in wing veins and mouthparts to classify the species into eleven families of bees.
