Just some thoughts about human cloning: Say we want to produce the "fastest human" 1. Replicate Usain Bolt 1000 times 2. Of the 1000 copies, find out which ones the fastest 3. Take the DNA of the fastest one, and replicate him 1000 times 4. Repeat steps 2-3 until optimal performance. This method, (derived from machine-learning algorithms), can be applied for optimizing other human traits.

justjm:

No need to clone. Just take a sample of their transcriptome and store it at the gene bank.

justjm:

Then genetically duplicate that transcriptome and make changes to it.

mhchen:

this topic has made me think of really weird things, I don't want to think about this anymore

mhchen:

like SUPER weird weird

justjm:

It's made everyone think of weird things, which is why it's commonly debated over morality. Like for instance, I know this person in town that decided to have a designer baby. Not kidding. She decided how the baby's physical appearance, intellect, and most specifically athletic traits. And yeah, indeed it is visible. But at the same time, the kid has some 'severe genetic defect'.. The kid JUMPS like a monkey

mhchen:

sounds like one of those you gain some you lose some type of things

justjm:

I used to think these things would only be in articles and in the paper, but eventually, I found out that people ACTUALLY do this stuff

mhchen:

Would you press the button: Get a super-normal ability but get a random bad side-effect

justjm:

Hm. Depends on what it is. And whether the bad side-effect makes me look like the complete opposite

mhchen:

the side-effect will have the same weight as what you gain

mhchen:

Like, you get tele-scope vision, but your hearing goes nearly deaf

justjm:

Well society would benefit from things like that overall. But from an individual standpoint, I'd rather be balanced

justjm:

Usually subjectivity makes these kinds of questions hard. But let's say I lose all my emotional intelligence. Then it wouldn't matter if I could run at the speed of sound but be a social outcast.

mhchen:

lol

Gdeinward:

this is true. I must say that woman that had the designer baby........ She had money
