The 1876 election was incredibly controversial, on the scale of (in modern times) Clinton v. Trump. The polls were very close as well. Tilden won the popular vote by a small margin, but Hayes won the electoral vote and had more states, and after some debating within the government structure itself, Hayes won. This basically marked the end of reconstruction.
