1. A buffalo is three quarters of the way down on his bungee jump from the Fred Hartman Bridge. How many total forces are acting on the buffalo (don't forget air resistance)? 2.An angry soccer hooligan head butts a light post with a force of 517.2 N after his team's goalie lets in a goal. What is the force applied to the soccer hooligan's head by the light post? 3.The Earth exerts a force of gravity on a 215 kg sumo wrestler. What is the magnitude of the Force of Gravity (in Newtons) that the sumo wrestler exerts on the Earth? 4.What is the magnitude of the weight (in Newtons) of a 1294 g ostrich egg? 5.What is the mass (in kg) of a 8559 N car?

justjm:

1. Make a systems schema and an FBD. Include these forces: - Weight - Normal Force - Air resistance - Friction - Force of application 2. Apply newton's third law. It is asking for the normal force which is the same, 517.2 N. It is difficult to think about but remember this is the force not the acceleration 3. Remember weight is a force. Apply F=ma f=w m = 215 kg a = g = 9.81 m/s^2 4. Apply w=mg but remember to convert grams to kg here 5. Solve backward. You are given weight and acceleration is of course gravity. Find mass.
