It depends on the intent of the piece. If the artist wishes for the piece to be published for the general public, the artist will need to take into consideration the societal norms and social restrictions. If the artist wishes for the piece for his or her own satisfaction, social norms do not play a pivotal role. But essentially what comes from the heart is the true representation of the artist's purpose.

Also, it is very difficult to write a song that adheres to the social norms but does not work well with the artist's feelings. Typically, they both go hand-in-hand. The artist will write what connects the mind, body, and soul, and if appropriate enough, will then publish it for the audience. The only time this doesn't happen is during mass production, which is the current focus of light for most artists today. Most musicians are now writing for money, not for their personal satisfaction.
