I need opinions- Should college athletes be paid?
i... maybe guess...no?
i agree with summer
no, i mean whats the point of going pro if theyre getting paid in college
I'm personally for college athletes being paid. Most college athletes work tight schedules with a tight budget and are being exposed to a similar degree of risk of a normal player. Remember most athletes also work abroad. NCAA has not addressed the free labor they are essentially carrying out. College athletes that end up dropping out either due to lack of interest or placement are left homeless or approaching poverty. Then, they end up in substance abuse and doing drugs. This issue is rampant throughout the US. College athletes should receive a type of stipend or financial aid for sure, and they should receive monetary bonuses occasionally from games. A few days ago, I was aware that California passed a law to mandate athletes a large salary. So the issue is in the nation's spotlight and we're probably going to add laws to go in that direction.
Bruh, @SummerWars @Lilypup01 @ygk i need a why
u either have to say summerwars OR lilypup01 because they are both me
anyways
they are being paid in college
so why they have t be payed to do sports?
oh yeah, and a common counter argument is that they could put the money to other services and departments. My rebuttal is that they already have so much money in storage, like think about it. Not only do they earn money from tuitions, they earn quite a good amount from scholarship profiteering, standardized exams, etc. (think about how much you've had to pay for exams like the SAT, ACT, & APs, and then apply that to a very large population). Indirectly, a large proportion of that revenue heads back to the colleges. Also, others say that scholarships given to athletes are enough for monetary benefits. However, that's only given to a small proprortion of college athletes, so it's not beneficial for everyone.

ooof
sorry
hell if i end up doing a sport for college i would lie to be paid for it so yeah i think they shoud be paid.
cause they get paid when they go pro. if they getting paid in college no ones gonna see the point in going pro. cause big name people like jalen hurts are going to make all their money in college and not go pro, and take more money out of the economy
well thats very true
They should at least be offered a stipend, consider the substance abuse cases that happen because college athletes go broke. Or if not a stipend, they could be offered other benefits that cover their needs.
No.
My family actually had this discussion when the California governor announced that he was signing a bill which would allow college athletes to be paid (Source: https://www.npr.org/2019/09/30/765700141/california-governor-signs-bill-allowing-college-athletes-to-profit-from-endorsem). My sister is going to Stanford so she would be included in this, hence why I'm so invested in this issue. The definition of 'paid' here might differ to your definition. His bill allows for athletes to "earn compensation for the use of their likeness, sign endorsement deals and hire agents to represent them." NCAA also ruled after the California fiasco that student athletes would be able to do this nationwide come 2021. (Source: https://variety.com/2019/biz/news/ncaa-college-athletes-sports-endorsement-deals-1203387044/). Anyway, here's my understanding of the arguments. The NCAA didn't allow student athletes to receive compensation from basically sponsors, because it would hyper-professionalize sports. Look at celebrities, songwriters, and other culture figures right now. If they make a mistake and one of their sponsors doesn't like that, they can pull out. Now imagine this hit to an 18yr old who is attempting to support his family with this lucky break. Imagine the pressure, all whilst trying to obtain a degree. Not only must he monitor his conduct on a daily basis, in public and private, but he must hire agents to represent him, and any other staff to support the business side of his endeavor, or suffer the burden of doing it all himself. This, the NCAA, would say detracts from why people come to college. People shouldn't come for a paycheck, but instead an education - focusing on that and saving cash endeavors for when you have a degree and are stepping out into the professional world. Now the college athlete scene is a multi-billion dollar industry, so you could argue that the NCAA doesn't mean well, and instead is simply greedy. College athletes produce the content, yet see none of the money that exchanges hands as a result of that content being present. If you allow student athletes to make cash off their likeness, this opens up doors and potential for them. As I mentioned earlier, being able to support their families and themselves. College is an expensive process which leaves many people in debt. Allowing those who are able to relieve this burden is perhaps, apt. That's the gist of the arguments.
Again, what I'm talking about might be different than to what you may be thinking, in as far as how the athletes are getting paid, but I figured I'd bring up what's happening right now.
yes, College athletes should be paid. I have done reaserch, and getting paid leads to better lifestyle and better future.
