Hxani:

In which situation is the object experiencing unbalanced forces? Question 1 options: A. A box resting on a horizontal floor B. A car slowing as it reaches a stop light C. A car with its cruise control set to 50 mph D.A rocket sitting on the launch pad

justjm:

An object with an acceleration is experiencing unbalanced forces. Which one do you think has acceleration?

justjm:

Notice how I say acceleration, not velocity, or in your case, constant velocity.

Hxani:

Thanks ^-^

justjm:

NP. So what do you think the answer is?

Hxani:

hmmm

Okay?

justjm:

If you can't really visualize acceleration, one way I like to think of it is that the derivative of velocity is acceleration: \(a(x)=v'(x)\) So for A and D, the velocity is clearly 0, thus the acceleration is also 0. For C, the velocity is 50 mph in some direction, so the acceleration is 0. In B, the velocity is *changing*, and what causes it to change is a resistant acceleration. That is only caused by an unbalanced force
