bill533:

21. The play was over, the music ceased, the crowd filed out. It was like a dream ended. People scattered in all directions. Mrs. Sommers went to the corner and waited for the cable car. 22. A man with keen eyes, who sat opposite to her, seemed to like the study of her small, pale face. It puzzled him to decipher what he saw there. In truth, he saw nothing—unless he were wizard enough to detect a poignant wish, a powerful longing that the cable car would never stop anywhere, but go on and on with her forever. How do paragraphs 21 and 22 contribute to the overall meaning of the passage? A They reference physical appearance as a way to show Mrs. Sommers’s changed outlook. B They introduce an outside observer as a way to highlight Mrs. Sommers’s internal conflict. C They use figurative language as a way to evoke Mrs. Sommers’s happiness as she returns home. D They describe the actions of other cable car passengers as a way to critique Mrs. Sommers’s behavior.
