Your name is big brother You say that you're watching me on the tele, Seeing me go nowhere, Your name is big brother, You say that you're tired of me protesting, Children dying everyday, My name is nobody But I can't wait to see your face inside my door Your name is big brother You say that you got me all in your notebook, Writing it down everyday, Your name is I'll see ya, I'll change if you vote me in as the pres, The President of your soul I live in the ghetto, You just come to visit me 'round election time I live in the ghetto, Someday I will move on my feet to the other side, My name is secluded, we live in a house the size of a matchbox, Roaches live with us wall to wall, You've killed all our leaders, I don't even have to do nothin' to you You'll cause your own country to fall
Lines from the song meaning: You say that you're tired of me protesting Children dying everyday: i was referring to the war that was going on at the time. The war going on in Vietnam. There were many protesters back in the States. By saying “Children are dying” he is talking about the young soldiers who were recruited in the war at that time
You've killed all our leaders: Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Huey Newton, Medgar Evers, Fred Hampton, Harry and Harriette Moore. One thing noticeable through history is how ubiquitous murders of influential Black leaders are. It’s also something to note that the government put in so much effort to dismantle the Black Panther party, who’s main efforts were to uplift the Black community, yet did nothing to combat the Ku Klux Klan. Stevie is left hopeless by this hopeless situation. How will he, how will his people rise and improve their circumstances when the government has killed all their leaders, the ones that worked so hard to steer the community towards the right direction? It’s also something to note that after the death of a Black leader, such as after MLK’s assassination, riots erupt in the ghettoes, strongly visualising the helplessness of the people.
I don't even have to do nothin' to you You'll cause your own country to fall: This is the belief that Big Brother and the government that he runs will fold over itself and ruin itself because of the way it is being run.
