Slavery existed in all the American colonies. However, the population of enslaved people was much larger in the southern colonies. Following independence, the northern states passed laws banning slavery, and importing slaves from Africa was illegal for all states by 1808. The population of free African Americans in northern states was small but growing. Yet slavery grew in the southern states. The wealth of large plantations depended on slave labor. The owners argued the plantations would fail without it. This dependence increased along with the demand for southern crops like cotton. The result was an ever more divided nation. As the 1800s passed, national leaders sought ways to soothe the divisions and keep the nation unified and growing.

I'm thinking this Cause: the northern states passed laws banning slavery, and importing slaves from Africa was illegal for all states by 1808. Effect: The result was an ever more divided nation. As the 1800s passed, national leaders sought ways to soothe the divisions and keep the nation unified and growing But I'm not completely sure... you might wanna check it out with someone else too
