Political and religious figure Roger Williams is best remembered for founding the state of Rhode Island and promoting the separation of church and state in Colonial America. His beliefs on religious freedom and tolerance, together with his rejection of the custom of confiscating property from native Americans, gained him the indignation of his religion and the banishment of his colonies.  Rogers founded the first American baptist church, and wrote the first English language dictionary.
