The seven other people were normal. Media just wants to make money and Kobe is the only person there with name recognition. Nobody knows 'Bob Jones.' And if it were actually eight regular people, they would have chosen the one readers would sympathize with the most (children, mothers, etc).

People care. They may just not know how to voice it. Men actively repress the majority of their emotions due to how society perceives us and treats us. That sets the stage for a lack of proper communication and thus those skills never develop. Thus...people just don't know how.

@Shadow I couldn't have said it better myself.

It's a corporate world. Once the mainstream media and celebrities notice that the trend of the incident declines, it will move to something else to keep up the demand. Also, frankly speaking, they probably only care about Kobe and the rest just for the sake of their sales. Was there any word about the pilot? Is there ever any word about the pilot, or the others?

These events have happened before a countless number of times, several that are more traumatizing. Yet they don't make it past the local paper, because it can't attract that many sales.
