Confucianism is a system of beliefs and conduct that originates from ancient China. Frequently described as tradition, philosophy, religion, humanistic or rational religion, way of governing or simply a way of living. The Chinese people pursued it for more than two centuries.Though transformed over time, it remains the Chinese's learning substance, source of values, and social code. Its influence also spread to other countries, especially Korea, Japan and Vietnam. The philosopher Confucius is the recognized founder of Confucianism, also referred to as the Ru-jia doctrine or School of Literati as it is known by Western scholars. Confucianism was originally composed of a set of political and moral doctrines which were based on Confucius ' teachings. Later on Mencius ' (Meng Zi) and Xunzi's (Xun zi) teachings also became part of Confucianism. The term Confucianism seems to be the invention of Western Christians who reached China around 1860 CE and were initially used to mark their notion of the non-Christian religions they found in China.




A Confucian is an individual believing in the teachings of Confucius the Chinese philosopher. The Confucian adjective represents a concept which is close to those teachings. It is Confucian practice to honor the ancestors. Confucius was a philosopher and teacher who lived from 550 to 479 BC.

Mencius was born in the State of Zou, now comprising the territory of the county-level city of Zoucheng, also known by his birth name Meng Ke.

He was an itinerant Chinese scholar and sage, and one of Confucianism's principal interpreters. Allegedly he was a pupil of the grandson of Confucius, Zisi. During period of the Warring States from 319 to 312 BC Mencius served as an official and scholar at the Jixia Academy in Qi State; When he took three years leave of absence from his official duties for Qi to mourn the death of his mother he expressed his filial devotion. He retired from public life, disappointed at his failure to effect changes in his contemporary world.

Mencius is buried in the Mencius Cemetery (also known as Mengzi Lin, Yasheng Lin), 12 km northeast of the main urban area of Zoucheng. A stele carried by a giant tortoise in stone and crowned with dragons stands before his grave.

Xun Zi was a Confucian who believed that human nature is centered on self-interest and greed, and the purpose of moral cultivation is to develop our nature into goodness. This put him at odds with Mencius. Later, the thinker Zhu Xi declared the views of Xun Zi to be unorthodox, instead supporting the position of Mencius.
