Oral tradition was necessary to preserve and pass on cultural values to future generations in ancient societies. Very few civilizations had a standardized writing system, of which writing was not common due to fewer resources. Usually, the writing was for the scribes writing for noblemen. In other words, there was no exact way to record thoughts and traditions other than orally reciting them. This is why recitation of poetry and other subjects is common in several ancient civilizations (Ancient India is known for this I believe).
