blablabla:

Yasmin bought several items at the discount store. She paid 8.75 percent sales tax, an amount of $4.59, on the total amount of her purchase. What was the total amount of her purchase before tax was added?

Mercury:

if we let the cost of the item be x, then it's implying that an 8.75% sales tax on x is equal to 4.59, or in other words (8.75/100) * x = 4.59 should be easy to solve for x from there
