Plants play a major role in the carbon cycle. Plants use carbon dioxide for (Respiration, excretion, Photosynthesis) , a process that produces chemical energy for an ecosystem. When plants die (Decomposers, Producers, Consumers) break down their parts and release some carbon as carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. The remaining carbon is buried in the soil.

some hints for filling in the two blanks blank 1: between respiration and photosynthesis, which process **uses** (rather than produces) CO2? blank 2: how do plants obtain energy? do they break down already-dead organisms (decomposer), produce their own energy (producer) or consume other organisms (consumer)?
