Interesting question. The main cause is that whales or other large aquatic creatures sometimes stray away from deep waters and end up on shore. Their bodies are adapted to having the buoyant force of water on all sides, so when it's not there anymore, they can't move, and are often crushed under the weight of their own skeleton/musculature, and/or die of dehydration.

Now, as to **why** they wander away, it can be due to changing currents or other changes in the oceanic environment. Sometimes their food source availability changes so they have to follow different paths than they're used to.
