A metaphor is figurative language when you apply a word to something which is not literally applicable.

For example.

The cat is a dog.

A cat is not literally a dog, but by that statement perhaps I'm implying that the cat was 'acting' like a dog. Maybe he was being rowdy which is uncharacteristic of cats.

Be careful though, because there is something called similes. This is another kind of figurative language which also compares things, but it uses the word like/as.
