Dispute-resolution centers and specialized courts. Do you think these are appropriate programs, or should regular criminal and civil courts manage all cases? What are the benefits and drawbacks of your choice?

Shadow:

What are, "resolution centers and specialized courts?" Do you know?

justus:

Let me read my book give me a second

justus:

I can't find anything

Shadow:

Did some research. Basically resolution centers and specialized courts are more direct forms of addressing issues in the community, especially the need for justice. I reviewed literature mostly consisting of specialized courts, so let's focus on those. Effectively, these specialized courts were formed to see if defendants were treated more as an individual, and not a case, what would their recidivism rates be? Would there be any notable differences in the rate of crime? For courts such as the domestic violence and drug courts, they saw noticeable benefits with offenders being less likely to re-offend 'against the same victim,' their were less case dismissals, and lower recidivism. Turns out when you treat people like humans, they act better. Big surprise.

Shadow:

Obviously with all the pretty numbers, what are the drawbacks? I dunno. I guess you can say they provide an burden (new courts have to be built, then need to hire). The counter arg to that being reduced crime + increased quality of life (partner not hitting me more, /yay) -> benefits the economy.

Shadow:

an economic burden*

justus:

Ah, I understand what you are saying

Shadow:

For the second link at the bottom, they have some stats you can grab for your argument.

Shadow:

Also, if your book doesn't define these terms and you're getting tested on them, that's kind of a bad book for the class, no?

justus:

Thank you, I will check It out.

justus:

No it does provide a lot of information but I just can't spot anything about the Dispute-resolution centers and specialized courts.

justus:

Oh wait I think I found it

justus:

let me take some pics

Shadow:

'Why Should I Contact a Community Dispute Resolution Center?' that section

justus:

justus:

there's many more pages but this is the main information I found

Shadow:

._.

Shadow:

unbelievable, so there was content

justus:

lol yeah

Shadow:

"A distinguishing feature of the community courts is their focus on quality-of-life crimes that erode a neighborhood's morale. Like dispute resolving centers they emphasize problem solving rather than punishment and build on restorative principles such as community service and restitution."

Shadow:

That encapsulates the majority of the definition, plus lays the groundwork for how you'd argue for them.

justus:

Okay I understand

Shadow:

I really don't see any strong and feasible arguments to go against xD

justus:

I see where you're coming from
