we can create a ratio of blue paint/red paint for both scenarios. let's call the first mixture "small mixture" (the one with 3 pts blue and 4 pts red) and the second mixture "big mixture" (16 pts red, with some unknown amount of blue)

same color means the same ratio of red to blue

therefore

small mixture red/small mixture blue = big mixture red/big mixture blue

since the amt. of blue paint in the big mixture is unknown, let this be x. fill in the quantities from the problem into the equation and solve for x.
