silvernight269:

Suppose some number A is increased by 20%, then the resulting number decreased by 10%. If the final number is 432, what is the value of A?

justjm:

You just need to model this scenario from words to math, and then the math is easy. You have the number A, and it is increased by 20%: \(1.20(A)\) Now, you decrease the final product by 10% \(0.90(1.20(A))\) And you know this whole thing equals 432 \(0.90(1.20(A))=432\) Now you can just solve for A by either distributing in first and then isolating A or just dividing twice. Your choice.
