How was the appointment of two Consuls during the Roman Republican example of a democratic principle

The idea of the Consuls was to have power over the empire. However, there where two Consuls so one part of the government would not have too much power. There are some other things the Consuls did, but that was the point of having two of them. Does that remind you of anything in regards to our government system?
