sammixboo:

When a volcano erupts, it essentially burns everything in its path and creates a layer of rock as well. So, there is no plant life or soil for plants to grow. Now, pioneer species are the plants that are the first to form in a bare area. For example, if a forest fire takes down an entire forest, the first types of plants to grow back are the pioneer species. Afterward, these pioneer species begin to fertilize the ground and break down the lava rocks into soil, which allows for other plants to get the proper nourishment and environment it needs to grow.
