How about we define what each of these words mean? It will help you understand which choices match with their phrases.
- Idiom: a figurative term of speech that does not make sense on its own, but represents another meaning entirely. ex. "It's raining cats and dogs
- Simile: a comparison using either "like" or "as" ex: "She runs fast as a cheetah
- Imagery: a literary device that causes you to visualize something when you read its words.
- Symbolism: a literary device that uses one object, setting or otherwise concept to describe another. The idea behind this is that whatever you're looking at is supposed to represent something else. ex: In Western cultures, the number 13 is often seen as bad luck and generally avoided. Friday the 13th is a very prominent example of this.
- Onomatopoeia: words that sound like noises ex: Cluck, honk, moo, neigh, oink
- Alliteration: using words in a sequence that have the same sound, or start with the same letter ex: She sells seashells by the seashore
- Hyperbole: a literary device that uses exaggeration to emphasize something ex: When I tapped him on the shoulder, he jumped nine feet in the air.
