[Question to all Moderators and Seniors of QC] Why can we not give direct answers?

AngeI:

I'd tell you but that goes against the no direct answer rule

imqwerty:

Bcz it's against the rules duh

Pixel:

Because it's supposed to be a learning website and you don't learn if you're just given an answer instead of the process on how to get the answer

Eiwoh2:

@Ultrilliam

umm:

It's better if we teach them how to do it in order for them to learn. Giving out direct answer goes nowhere and it's basically allowing them to cheat, and not learn. e.e

AngeI:

All of you but Howie are suspended

xXDerpyPugXx:

._.

xXDerpyPugXx:

Ok thats fair. :s its different but ok

Ultrilliam:

Ultrilliam:

The reason we do not give direct answers is because we aim to teach the user, while some may learn from an answer, most don't. Our mission is to make the world a giant study group, and we do not believe in cheating to reach that end.

Vocaloid:

Everybody has hit the main points (to encourage learning and discourage cheating) but I will also add that this rule improves the quality and accuracy of help. If people are required to come up with an original justification for their solution, it is much harder for people to just write something randomly or copy-paste someone else's answers.

Vocaloid:

“The attempt of any student to present as his or her own work that which he or she has not produced is regarded by the faculty and administration as a serious offense. Students are considered to have cheated if they copy the work of another during an examination or turn in a paper or an assignment written, in whole or in part, by someone else. Students are responsible for plagiarism, intentional or not, if they copy material from books, magazines, or other sources without identifying and acknowledging those sources or if they paraphrase ideas from such sources without acknowledging them.” https://www.niu.edu/academic-integrity/faculty/types/index.shtml

xXDerpyPugXx:

"The attempt of any student to present as his or her own work that which he or she has not produced is regarded by the faculty and administration as a serious offense" would this still go if they wrote it in there own words?

Vocaloid:

Two main takeaways: - Submitting something that you didn’t produce yourself - Copying someone else’s work Are considered academic dishonesty. Therefore, sitting there while everybody else does all the work for you, and then turning in work that you didn’t do anything to contribute in, is cheating.

Vocaloid:

Paraphrasing someone else’s work with proper citation is fine but this doesn’t apply to a lot of questions because they’re not free response anyway.
