so, this is a complicated essay with a lot going on, but I'll go over some main points that will help you clue in onto what type of essay this is

- there are a lot of narrative components where she tells how her mother's English has affected Tan growing up (ex: how her mother's nonstandard English, influenced by her native Chinese, influenced how Amy understood and thought about English growing up)
