So let’s start with some basics. “Anime” is like “Hollywood.” The medium of anime is animation, while Hollywood’s medium is film. There are many anime genres, intended for different age groups. Just because it’s “cartoons” does not mean that all anime is for kids. The same can be said of Hollywood: many different genres, intended for different audiences.

So you really cannot lump all anime together and say it’s all good or all bad. You have to evaluate each series or movie like you would evaluated any movie put out by Hollywood. Does this anime contain nudity, sexuality, wanton violence, perversion, vile language? Christians draw the lines for these things in different ways according to their conscience, so you may not even have a consensus on whether watching a particular anime is sinful or not.

I will say that anime is a product of Japanese culture, and that culture is very different from American culture. Violence and sexuality are prevalent in Japanese society and media. Casual nudity is often depicted in anime, including of minors. For this reason, it’s a medium that needs to be very carefully explored.

There’s a lot of Americanized anime that is pretty safe. Speed Racer, Castle in the Sky, Astroboy. I really didn’t grow up watching anime, but I know there are other popular teen series out there in the USA that are probably pretty decent. Parents need to be aware what their children are watching.
