Maxine:

It's Division Geri ran in a marathon race. It took her 3 hours and 28 minutes to run 26 miles. how many minutes did it take her to run 1 mile if she ran at the same rate for the whole race ?

Shadow:

ah the big math

Maxine:

ya

Shadow:

\[\frac{ 3 hr + 28 minutes }{ 26 miles }\]

Shadow:

What do you think we should do first?

Maxine:

divide?

Shadow:

We have to divide, but currently we have too many variables. We have hours, minutes, and miles, when they're asking, "how many minutes did it take her to run 1 mile"

Maxine:

im still confused

Shadow:

we have two different determiners of time in the numerator, hours and minutes, when they are just asking for minutes.

Maxine:

so 28 minutes?

Shadow:

Well it took her 3hrs and 28 minutes to do the 26 miles, but we want the total time it took her to do those 26 miles, in minutes.

Shadow:

Convert 3hrs to minutes, then add the 28 minutes, then divide the total minutes it took her to do the run by 26 miles, giving you the rate.

Maxine:

so 8 minutes?

Shadow:

Correct

Maxine:

ok thx

Shadow:
