Distribution Systems
In America, we are fortunate to have a food distribution system that safely and routinely delivers food from farms to markets. This provides people with access to food. Let us take a look at how food gets from the farm to your house. This may include food that is grown locally, grown elsewhere in the United States, or grown in a foreign country and then imported for sale.

Before your breakfast cereal ends up in your pantry, it goes through a large number of steps. The grain is grown and purchased by the company that manufactures the cereal. It is transported from the farm to the manufacturing plant. At the manufacturing plant, the cereal is produced and most often packaged. At times, the food may be produced in one location and transported to another to be packaged. After the food is packaged, it is transported to a holding facility. At the distribution facility, it is held until orders come in. Once an order is placed, the food is either shipped to the store’s holding and distribution facility or transported directly to the store. If it goes to the store’s distribution facility, it will then be transported to individual stores. From the store, it is purchased and ends up in your pantry. I bet you had no idea how much was involved with getting food from the farm to the table. There are a few key players in food distribution. In general, the faster and easier the food spoils, the fewer times it can change hands. Food or fiber products that have a long shelf life may pass through a number of hands along distribution channels before they end up in your pantry.
