CASSIE0:

Martin measured the lengths of five shoes in his closet. Their lengths were 10.252 inches, 9.894 inches, 10.455 inches, 9.527 inches, and 10.172 inches. Which two estimation techniques will give the same result for the total number of inches for all five shoes?

sweetlycrazed:

for this, the answer is quite simple. you would have to round up, or estimate; on the inches on the shoes that 9.894 inches and 9.527 inches. always remember this rhyme, it will help you: 0-4; keep as before. 5 or above; give it a shove. 9.894 -> for this one, it would be rounded up by turning into 10. here's why: 9.894 = 9 is higher than 8. the eight is higher than five so it allows the given rule to apply. however, for the last two digits, they stay the same. because since the four isn't a five or higher, it stays the same. the answer would be 10.994 inches. 9.527 -> like before, this one will be rounded up to be 10. 9.527 = do you see the five? that gives permission for the 9 to turn into a 10. but, before you say that you are finished, do you see the 7 at the end, right after the 2? you have to boost that up a number, the answer of that estimation value would be 10.530.
