I forget the specifics but in chemistry you use a special paper to test if chemicals are present I think, and if they are, it turns a certain color. I was just using it figuratively.

My family calls those handles the "OH CRAP" handles ~I changed up the wording a little so I don't get warned for saying what it's actually called~

When you realize that others in your car are comfortable when you drive or others in cars around don't seem to just want to get by you. And when you would be able to have the most important people in the car with you, so you know you will do everything you can to keep them safe. Does that make sense?
