Hi, welcome to QuestionCove! sorry it's taken a while to get you an answer. During this time, Britain was on a quest for opium and other fine products in Asia. Great Britain and some European countries began the trade of opium paying with gold for this one, since the European products had a low demand in China; this was part of the trade imbalance with China. In Europe we saw a huge demand for Chinese silk. tea, and their porcelain pottery. This led to what we know as the Opium Wars. China ended up losing and had to accept the terms of Europe, while watching their people become addicted to opium. The British ended up establishing THEIR government in Hong Kong. hope this helps :)
