A boat has a speed of 9 miles per hour
Hello
Is there a particular question about this boat?
A boat has a speed of 9 mph in calm water. It takes about 4 hours to travel upstream but only 2 hours to travel the same distance downstream.Which equation can be used to find c, the speed of the current in miles per hour?
I'm guessing this is multiple choice. Can you list the options?
Yes
When the boat is traveling upstream it's going against the current. You could structure it as 9 - c, since it goes at 9mph in calm water, but the current would slow it down, so you subtract from it. As such going downstream, you'd add the velocity of the current to the speed of the boat in calm water, making it 9 + c Then you can apportion their respective times to each, 4hrs to upstream, and 2hrs to downstream.
Thank you so much for your help!
