Caedmon was an illiterate cow-herder who had the desire to sing in praise of God, using phrases he just didn't know. During a dream, Caedmon had heard a voice that told him to sing. In order to promote Christianity, he then produced a hymn which Bede saw as a miracle and decided to preserve it.
